The image of society |
The way kids should be |
It seems to be that the view of society comes into play once we are born, through our parental guidance, and through what is expected as a female. It is almost like the stages of life have turned into a ritual. A particular document from the Womens Liberation Movement, "Barbarous Rituals: 84 ways to feminize humans" by Anonymous, shares these stages of life that have become ritual. The point of this document is to specify these detailed everyday acts that are overlooked. Being born as the sex that you are, and having to live up to society's expectations on how a female should act, and what a female should look like. I do not think society understands the pressure put upon young woman to maintain a certain image through there adolescence. A certain issue that was listed in the document that had really touched me was when it said,"---feeling basically comfortable in your own body, but gradually learning to hate it because you are: too short or tall, too fat or thin, thick-thighed or big-wristed, large-eared or stringy-haired, short-necked or long-armed, bowlegged, knock-kneed, or pigeon-toed--something that might make boys not like you." I remember being perfectly comfortable, in my own body, and feeling beautiful when i looked in the mirror, however that soon changed when i entered middle school. My biggest insecurity was my height. i knew i was short but it wasn't something that concerned me until i had to here it from third party perspective. I feel as though these small aspects of life are not considered throughout life. Why is it from the start we are given these puzzle pieces instead of seeking our own puzzle pieces? We are told that we are all unique yet we are striped of this ability due to woman constantly being objectified through television, magazines etc...,and its a pretty hard and immoral standard to live up to. As i read through this document it was a reflection of my own life through realizing that all these aspects are put upon females without truly knowing the affects.
However even though these are unfair circumstances, it is up to us as individuals to sculpt our own image and be happy with who we are. Everybody is truly unique as far as looks and how they choose to do things. In the end we are only a well set group of molecules. If you think about it out of the 6 billion people in the world there is only ONE you! , and thats pretty damn special.
